Chapter Seven
(SIX YEARS LATER)
“So what you are telling me is that because she failed to give you the report on time. You weren’t able to give it to the HR team?”Alfred asked as he sat in his office starring at his secretary and his manager.
“It’s not….that. Mr Alfred. All am……”
“All you are saying is that you suck! You suck at what you do. Because of you have had to lose a couple of Millions today and I hate people who make me lose money”Alfred told him curtly.
“Am sorry sir. It won’t ever happen again”The manager begged.
“Am sure that it won’t ever happen again because you are fired. Pack up your things and leave” Alfred said as he got out of his seat starring at his manager and also at his secretary.
“What about me sir? It wasn’t my fault. I had the report ready and……”His secretary stopped when she saw him pick up his phone.
“As of today my secretary is fired. Find me someone new and that should be as soon as possible”Alfred said as he ended the call starring at his secretary who stood shocked.
“Get your severance pay from the HR department and get out of my company”He yelled at them as he stormed out of his office.
“Alfred?”On hearing his sister call. He stopped to stare at her.
“Did you handle it?”Tiffany asked as they both walked towards the elevator.
“They have both been fired and…..”
“Firing those two isnt enough. They should be put behind bars”Tiffany suggested.
“The decision I made is the best one. So let’s leave it as that”He said as they both got into the elevator.
“Where are you going now?”She asked.
“Am meeting a friend”Alfred replied.
“I just hope you won’t be late. Remember that it’s Sarah birthday today”Tiffany told him.
“I won’t be late and I will bring a gift too”He added as the elevator door opened and they got out of it together.
“Hope you will this time. You’ve disappointed her enough. Don’t do that today. Especially when it’s her birthday”Tiffany cajoled him and he nodded before getting into his mercedes while his chauffeur drove off.
He got to the restaurant on time and there was John seated at his chair waiting for him.
They have been friends ever since they got into college. Due to his family. John had to leave the city seven years ago and though they were miles apart they still communicate with each other. It just so happen that John came to the city for a conference and had called Alfred for them to meet up.
After the greeting were exchanged and after they ordered. John began the topic of him calling Alfred.
“Really? Congrats bro”Alfred said earnestly.
“When will the wedding be taking place?”Alfred asked as he sipped his wine.
“Next week. We don’t want to spend time apart again. I know am telling you a bit late but you have to come. My wedding wouldn’t be complete without you”John said
“Sure. I wouldn’t miss your wedding for anything in the world”Alfred replied as they both clink their glasses to drink from it.
“So tell me about you. Anyone new in your life?”John asked.
“When i have an international company to oversee? Even if there is . She would be out of my life because the company is my only focus now”Alfred said
“So you are telling me that for the past Five years. You have burried yourself in work?”John asked
“Is that wrong?”Alfred asked in return.
“It isn’t but am worried. It’s been Five years since your marriage to Grace. Shouldn’t you move on now?”John asked.
“Move on? That word doesn’t sound good to me”Alfred replied.
“Am serious here Alfred. Forget Grace. She left you when you needed her most and it’s been Five years since you’ve seen her . It’s time you find someone more better than her” John said.
“Someone more better?”Alfred questioned as his mind drifted to Fannie.
“Yes someone more better. Haven’t you ever come across someone who melt that icy heart of yours? Someone your willing to do everything for? Someone you love with all your heart ?” John said again and his mind drifted off to Fannie.
He had loved her and was willing to do anything to have her but she left just like Grace did. He thought.
“That person doesn’t exist for me”Alfred said as he faked a smile.
“Fannie! come here”On hearing the name Fannie being called. Alfred turned expecting to see her only to be disappointed when he saw that it was a little girl who her mother was calling.
“Well I do hope you meet someone who will make you happy. Being a single dad doesn’t suit you and I heard it was Sarah birthday today. Help me give it to her”John said as he claimed Alfred attention again.
“I will”Alfred replied as he stared at his watch to see that it was getting Late.
The two excused themselves with the promise of seeing each other at the wedding.
Alfred sat in his car thinking as his chauffeur drove him home.
It’s been Six years since He has seen Fannie. Ever since she left. All of his endeavour to find her were futile.
He had been so lost when she left and had relied on alcohol just to try to forget her and during one night. He had gotten drunk and had slept with a girl he picked up from the Night club.
The turned out to be Grace Hoffman, a college student. And It all got worse when she got pregnant with his child. She had been a virgin and wanting to take up to his responsibility he had married her thinking he could use her to forget Fannie once and for all.
But the marriage had only lasted a year. As soon as Grace gave birth to his daughter, She left him and his new born child. He never got to know why and he didn’t even bother trying to find her.
Their marriage had been a loveless one and it was better that way.
The car stopped in front of the mansion and he got out of the car with John gift in his hands.
Alfred walked in to see Tiffany in the sitting room and curled up in her lap asleep was Sarah.
“You said you wouldn’t be late” Tiffany accused as soon as he walked in.
“Am sorry. I lost track of time “He replied.
“You always say that. You don’t give a damn about her right?”Tiffany asked starring at Sarah.
“She is my daughter. Why won’t I care about her?”
“You really have an odd way of caring for her. While the party was going on and while her friends were giving her gift. All she thought of was when you will arrive. She kept on talking about the gift you would buy her and had begged me to let her wait for you so she could get the gift tonight but due to you losing track of time. She slept off” Tiffany said feeling angry.
“I will make it up to her. So let’s just drop it”Alfred said.
“Why don’t you just admit it. You don’t care about her. You only think of your child as a burden?”Tiffany yelled at him.
“Now that’s enough! You know nothing about my feelings. So stop insinuating things”He told her off.
“Then show me! Show me that you just don’t think of Sarah as a burden. You said you love kids and now that you have one of your own. You shouldn’t act this way towards her”.
“Daddy” Alfred was unable to reply because Sarah woke up.
“Happy birthday darling”he said as he moved towards Tiffany to carry her little form into his arms.
“Thanks. What did you buy for me?”Sarah asked him eagerly.
“Something you would love”He said as the chauffeur walked in carrying a big teddy.
“Is that for me?”Sarah asked happily and he nodded.
“Thanks daddy”she said as she got out of his hands to take the large teddy from the chauffeur.
“Am going to put it beside me at night.”Sarah said.
“It’s getting late Sarah. Go ahead with Nanny Lina. “Tiffany suggested as the nanny walked into the room.
“Can you tuck me In daddy?”Sarah asked hoping that he would do it.
“Of course” he replied as she eagerly ran into his arms and he took her to room to get her ready for bed.
He had only tucked her in a year ago and that had been when she was just a baby. He hadn’t done that ever since she began to walk until she turned Five today.
“Your gift is the best ever”she said as she layed on the bed.
“Do you like it that much?”He asked.
“Yes. Thank you”She said looking cute with her dimple.
“Your welcome. Now it’s time you sleep. I heard you’ve been waiting for me?”He asked and she nodded.
“When will you get married again?”She asked suddenly.
“Why do you ask that?”
“It’s because you have been alone and just like Jacob have both his daddy and mommy . I also want a mommy too”she said using her best friend as example.
He knew that his daughter was very smart for her age and that she often spoke like an adult but what he didn’t expect was for her to be asking for a mom.
“You do know that you have a mom?”He asked and she nodded.
“I speak to her once in a year on the phone. So i do know that I have a mom but what I want is a mom who will be with you and I always”she said.
“Go to sleep darling. You are too young to be asking this sort of thing” he said as he tried to ignore her.
“I know that but I do wish that you will find a new mommy for me. A mommy who will love me “Sarah said again and he could only nod.
He stood up to turn off the light and quickly Sarah added.
“I want a mom. Give me that as another birthday present daddy”she said and he nodded and bade her good night before leaving the room.
For a long time that night. Alfred stood by his balcony thinking about what Sarah told him.
How would he find a new mom for her and besides is he even ready to have another woman in his life? He thought as he went to bed that night and when he couldn’t think of an answer. He slept off.
